Intensive Studies Actors August 2016
I am always humbled by the beautiful people that attend our International (Intensive) Studies Program at my studio in Los Angeles. For 2 weeks, actors from all over the world (this group was from France, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, England, Canada and various great parts of the United States) come together and share their joys, their pain, their sadness, and their vulnerabilities with other strangers. Though they came looking to grow as an actor, they took such a beautiful journey as human beings. What I love about the ISP is they are not competitive with each other but instead, supportive and encouraging each one to open up and take risks. I was concerned when I accepted a French student who didn’t speak a great deal of English. Would he be able to keep up? Would the other members be patient with his challenge of the English language? In my class, on the last day, Chris was living the life of a doctor who had to remove a roach from a little boy’s ear. He was so worried about saying the English words that I could see his inability to connect with the reader. I said, “Do it in French.” He smiled and all of a sudden this beautiful, sensitive man was able to take what we had taught him – that relationship guides you – not the story, not the character – and enjoy creating this life with the child.
Everyone in the class was congratulating him and giving amazing support. When he left he thanked me for this experience and was excited to take the Haber Philosophy of living the life into his native tongue.
I ask myself, “Why do I teach so much and for so many years?” It is for times like this when I see humanity at its best – Caring for each other and loving the process of creation. What could be better than that?
Please spread the word that we will be having another ISP from Dec 5 – December 16, 2016. We would love to share this experience with everyone!
